It was another tough week for the Bromfield boys varsity basketball team as it lost first to the Gardner Wildcats, 66–43, on Thursday, Jan. 19, and then to the Grafton Indians, 78–37, on Saturday, Jan. 21.
In Thursday’s game, Bromfield started out strong with an early first-quarter lead thanks to seven points from sophomore Jackson Harrigan. However, the Wildcats finished the quarter with a slim 10–9 lead. Their lead remained small as Bromfield battled to keep the game relatively close, and Gardner led only 22–20 by the half’s end.
The visiting Wildcats made things tougher for Bromfield in the second half, extending their lead to 46–36 by the end of the third quarter. The Trojans scored only seven points in the fourth, while Gardner’s players scored 20 to take the victory, leaving Bromfield with an overall season record of 0–10. Harrigan was the Trojans’ lead scorer with 14 points.
With Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh in the stands on a visit to recruit Telegram & Gazette Football Defensive Player of the Year Ifeatu Melifonwu, Bromfield traveled to Grafton on Saturday. Melifonwu’s skills as a basketball player were on display during the first half, highlighted by a fast break and dunk early in the game that set the tone for a contest that grew increasingly lopsided. The first half concluded with Grafton ahead by an implausible 48–21 points.
The Indians scored 30 more points in the second half to the Trojans’ 16. Bromfield’s Harrigan was again lead scorer for the Trojans with his 10 points.
The Trojans’ search for a first win was set to continue on Tuesday, Jan. 24, when they were scheduled to play Lunenburg.
