An SUV and a pickup collided on Ayer Road early Tuesday morning, leaving three people injured, all of whom were hospitalized. Two of the injured were Bromfield students, according to an email the school sent to parents later that day. The crash is under investigation, said Sergeant John Coates, who was on duty at the time.
Principal Scott Hoffman emailed Bromfield parents Tuesday afternoon to alert them to the crash, writing that both students were being treated for their injuries and were expected to make full recoveries. He asked that the privacy of the families involved be respected.
The collision occurred just after 7 a.m. near the post office at the intersection of Ayer and Lancaster County roads. Coates said off-duty Harvard firefighters stopped to render assistance at the scene. They were soon joined by other firefighters from Harvard and Ayer, as well as ambulance services from Harvard, Ayer, and Devens.
Both vehicles were severely damaged and towed from the scene, resulting in a major backup on Ayer Road as the morning rush hour got underway. Coates said more information about the collision would be available when the investigation is completed.
The intersection where the crash took place has been the subject of discussion by the Board of Selectmen for the past year or more. Selectmen Ron Ricci and Stu Sklar recently presented a proposal to replace the intersection with a traffic circle designed to reduce speeds and eliminate the Lancaster County Road entry to Ayer Road.
