The old library has served Harvard well in the past and should be utilized as well as is possible in the future. Its location in the very heart of our town allows full access by families of the town and could remain another location that adds depth and character to the center while benefitting our townspeople.
There are multiple rooms that would be useful for small classes, meeting rooms, and recreation areas that would be able to be shared by a greater percentage of our residents over the longest period of time daily. As I understand the issue, there is a group awaiting lease agreements now that has been enthusiastically offering a cultural center and has had a plan in place for well over a year.
We would rather see the historic center used to serve our residents instead of a school that would be a regional facility. Such a school may affect the traffic and parking situation and would surely limit the useful time per week that the building would be used, including evenings and weekends.
The old library is not just a piece of real estate to be occupied and consumed. It is part of the Common with the proud old homes, churches, and the quaint old General Store.
Consider the huge and beautiful new library, the massive renovation of the Town Hall, as well as the work being done by the Council on Aging. All have been done with attention to historic preservation and convenience of town residents. Please keep our town center a vibrant heart of Harvard that we all can utilize and appreciate.
There are plenty of locations available for this regional school that would not affect the beautiful New England town center that we have loved for so long.
