Am I the only resident shocked by the possibility of a rotary to be constructed on Ayer Road?
If speed reduction on Ayer Road is truly the goal, then why not avoid the permanent disruption of traffic and huge expense and just lower the speed limit in the commercial district? A land swap, rerouting traffic, and closing roads sounds like a convoluted plan for slowing traffic. Without reducing the speed limit, cars naturally speed up on the other side of the rotary, continuing at a high rate of speed, which doesn’t solve the problem of entering traffic anywhere else in the commercial district. I might be able to justify a rotary as a traffic solution if it were part of a new or expanded commercial development, the merits of which might actually warrant a rotary. Other towns with far greater traffic than Harvard are not dotted with rotaries. They employ lower speed limits and/or traffic lights for safe pedestrian and automobile conveyance. The Aug. 19 article didn’t indicate that the selectmen considered simply reducing the speed limit. Please lower the speed limit.
