Harvard Girl Scouts took part in Seeds of Awareness Day, Sept. 17, helping to spread the word about food insecurities in Worcester County and how to help by volunteering at the Community Harvest Project orchard on Prospect Hill Road.
The scouts are also supporting a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, “Kylee’s Kare Kits for Kidz,” founded by Kylee McCumber of Leominster. The 15-year-old McCumber provides food on weekends for school children in Leominster, Winchendon, Athol, and Orange. Harvard Girl Scouts provide fresh apples from the Community Harvest Project on a weekly basis as she sends home backpacks of food every Friday for more than 350 schoolchildren in Leominster alone. The Harvard Girl Scouts learned who to help and how to partner with another girl their age who is really making a difference in the fight against hunger. This project was part of their Silver Award, the highest award available to Cadette Girl Scouts, which includes 50 hours of work by each girl on a major service project. The scouts also produced a program on the Community Harvard Project for Harvard Cable TV, made 92 signs for each apple tree row in the orchard, and hosted the Seeds of Awareness Day to raise awareness of local hunger and how to help.
