From Friday, June 3, to Sunday, June 5, Harvard will once again host the re-created 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, a Civil War re-enactment unit portraying the fabled fourth regiment of the legendary Irish Brigade, as it carries out the activities of a Union Army training and recruiting camp on the Common.
On Saturday and Sunday the public is welcome to observe and talk to the soldiers as they go about their chores and training activities. The Hardtacks, a Civil War-era folk music group, will play music from the mid-19th century on period instruments. Visitors to the encampment are welcome to join in the chorus on rally songs, ballads, dance tunes, and humorous parodies. Saturday evening brings the Historical Society’s twilight/moonlight tour of the town center cemetery, featuring residents whose lives were affected by the Civil War. The first tour is at 7:30 p.m. Re-enactors and visitors are welcome to the Congregational Church for refreshments and conversation starting around 9 p.m.
