The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden, 145 Bolton Road, provides a community of support, therapeutic services and education to facilitate healing for those experiencing cancer. All programs require pre-registration. Email Kelly@healinggarden.net or call 978-456-3532.


SUPPORT GROUPS

All support groups are FREE and require pre-registration.

  • YOUNG WOMEN’S SUPPORT GROUP –  2nd and 4th Mondays,  9:30 -11 a.m.  (no groups in July and August, will reconvene in September)
  • IN TREATMENT SUPPORT GROUP –  1st and 3rd Mondays, 1-2:30 p.m. 
  • POST TREATMENT SUPPORT GROUP –  1st and 3rd Wednesdays, 11-12:30 p.m. 
  • LIVING WITH METASTATIC CANCER –  1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 11 to 12:30 p.m.
  • LIVING WITH METASTATIC CANCER –  2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 3:30-5 p.m.
  • OVARIAN CANCER GROUP –  3rd Thursday, 12-1:30 p.m. (no groups in July and August, will reconvene in September)

Movement and Strengthening

  • Qi Gong 
    Combining the vehicles of Tai Chi and Qi Gong, this practice incorporates balanced movement, breathing exercises, meditation and posture strengthening.
    Thursdays June, July, August, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

  • Mat Pilates for Building Strength 
    Pilates is a system of controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the total body. The blend of strength and flexibility training improves posture and reduces stress.

Mindfulness

  • Mindfulness for Daily Living 
    Learn mindfulness strategies to quiet your busy mind. Find your inner energy balance and access your potential for joyful living.

  • Drop-in Meditation: Mindful Mondays
    Sit in the beautiful Garden Room and practice Mindful Monday. There will be a twenty minute meditation CD. One special Mindful Monday will be led by Kara Wetzel on June 6 from 12-1 p.m. called Meditation in Color!

  • Oneness Blessing 
    Receive a transformative blessing-a direct transfer of energy “which causes the heart to flower and the mind to quiet”. Proceeded by a meditation and accompanied by live healing music.

  • Meditation with Horses
    Learn a visualization meditation to practice with animals or on your own. We will practice the meditation in a circle and then walk next door to practice with the horses at Sheriffmuir Farm.

  • Smoothies!  
    Jocelyn will give you tips and ideas about how to feel your best through  healthy, nutritious and delicious smoothies. The approach she will outline can help you overcome issues of fatigue, appetite control, weight control, and boosting your mood.

Expressive Arts Offerings

  • Writing for Wellness Class 
    In this workshop, we’ll sit in the garden and write in response to inspirational prompts.  Bring a notebook and a pen.

  • Coloring as a Spiritual Practice 
    During this workshop Morwen will guide you into a sense of timelessness through the art of coloring her detailed and fanciful drawings. Relax and fly.
    Monday June 13 1-3 p.m.
    $10 includes cardstock coloring pages and is ready to frame!
  • Watercolor Impressions from the Garden 
    During this two-session workshop, we’ll let the wonders of The Healing Garden’s beautiful surroundings inspire us as we explore several ways to capture our impressions of nature using watercolor paints. No art experience necessary. Please plan to attend both sessions. Class size limited. Pre-registration required.

    Wednesdays July 13 and 20, 1 to 3 p.m.
    $20 for the series 
  • Creating a Kitchen Container Garden 
    During this 2-hour workshop, participants will create a container herb garden to take home while learning the basics for successful maintenance and harvest.  Class size limited. Pre-registration required. Feel free to bring your own work gloves. All other materials will be provided.

  • Creating Your Personal Summer Mandala 
    New Activities: Using simple techniques and interesting mediums, we’ll create several ‘summer-inspired’ mandalas. No art experienced required. Class size limited. Pre-registration required.
    Wednesdays June 8, 15, and 22, 1 to 3 p.m.
    $30 for the series
  • Musical Inspired Mandala Making 
    During this relaxing 3-hour workshop, participants will use simple techniques and interesting mediums to complete a unique and personal mandala of their choice while listening to meditative music. No art experienced required. Class size limited. Pre-registration required.
    Wednesday August 17, 1 to 4 p.m.

  • Art With and In Nature
    We will begin in the art room to introduce the topic and then proceed mindfully onto the grounds, opening to the organic art materials found in the natural world. No art experience required. 
    Pre-registration required.
    Session one: Andy Goldsworthy and Patterns. Andy Goldsworthy is a world-renowned artist who uses only materials that he finds in nature to make art. Come search for patterns in nature, repeating the patterns in art like a nonverbal conversation between you and nature.
    Session two: Create your own story stick. How does your story appear in the colors and textures of nature? Is it reminiscent of the ocean? A tree? A rock?
    Session three: Group art piece in the woods. Take the time to explore the grounds and find objects in nature that you are drawn to. We will then use those objects to create a group art piece.
    Mondays June 20,  3-5 p.m.; June 27  1-3 p.m.; and July 11, 1 to 3 p.m.

  • Farm Share and Recipes! 
    The Healing Garden is collaborating with the Community Harvest Project to provide our clients and families with a regular farm share through this summer and fall. Each pick up session will have a different focus including a special session for parents and children: Potato Stamping on Monday, August 8.

  • Circle of Healing and Song with the Threshold Choir
    Raise your voice in community singing! Join the Threshold Choir to sing, listen and receive the power of song. All are welcome!

  • Join our Walking Group!
    For all clients, friends and family. Meet at the Healing Garden at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and come for a walk. It could be around the Gardens or around Harvard. You decide!
    FREE. No need to sign up.
  • Community Picnics
    Come any day to visit our outdoor gardens, Monday through Thursday to cool off in the Garden Room.
