Following a steady stream of rainy games, temperatures in the high 70s and sunshine were a welcome change for the Bromfield girls lacrosse team last week. Bromfield crushed Oakmont 18-1 at home on Tuesday, May 10, and trounced Littleton 14–2 on Thursday, May 12, and Nashoba 17–4 on Saturday, May 14, both in away games.
Bromfield’s strengths were on display throughout the May 10 game against Oakmont. After a 40-minute delay because a referee was stuck in traffic, Bromfield quickly took the upper hand, with sophomore Chandler Farley scoring in the first 45 seconds, seventh-grader Izzy Planchet a minute later, and a third goal from senior Sophia Turchetta an impressive 11 seconds off the draw.
Oakmont did attempt to recover from these initial blows. After the referees called a foul on Bromfield off the draw, Oakmont sprinted the ball down the field and shot twice. However, Bromfield goalie Emily Podgorni blocked both shots and sent the ball back up the field, which allowed Bromfield to settle comfortably again near the Oakmont goal and score.
With little further resistance, Bromfield scored many more times before the end of the half. Turchetta scored three more goals, junior Kaeli Armstrong scored twice, Farley scored again, sophomore Cara Olejarz scored once, and freshman Courtney Route scored once, bringing the score to 12–0.
Because Bromfield had such a large lead over Oakmont, the referees decided to “run the clock” for the second half, meaning that the clock would not stop after goals.
Oakmont did manage to score once in the second half, but Bromfield scored six more times, with three goals in a row from Route.
Turchetta, Parlee, and Route had especially strong performances that day. Turchetta scored on five of the eight shots she took and had one assist; Parlee scored on one of four shots she took and had four assists; and Route scored on every shot she took. In fact, the five points Parlee posted resulted in her passing the 200-point mark in her lacrosse career, a remarkable achievement.
