Coming a week after Earth Day and with warmer weather on the way, the timing of the event couldn’t be better. But with 145 half-mile segments to be tidied up, it will take a village to do the job, nearly as many residents as the number (192) who participated in the second night of Town Meeting. More, if the work is done in teams, as the organizers encourage.
The event seems a perfect opportunity for neighbors, families, and civic groups not only to spruce up a corner of Harvard, but also to get to know each other a bit better or, as sociologist Robert Putnam, the author of “Bowling Alone,” might put it, to build some social capital, the fabric of connections that make for a resilient community.
Organizers Libby Levison, Paul Green, and Brian McClain have arranged for signup and supplies and have recruited the DPW to retrieve filled bags at the end of the event. To claim a section of road, gather your team and go to http://goo.gl/FeaVTB to register.
