This week police made eight traffic stops that resulted in five citations and three verbal warnings. Police also assisted one motorist with a disabled vehicle, fielded one call about a roadway hazard, and responded to two requests for burn permits. The ambulance crew responded to five medical emergencies and took three people to the hospital, one with Advanced Life Support on board. Three people refused medical treatment or transport to the hospital.
Tuesday, Jan. 5
At 11:51 a.m. police were called to the Bromfield School to take custody of a small amount of marijuana confiscated from a student. A resident stopped at the station at 2:29 p.m. to report receiving an IRS-scam phone call. A Westcott Road resident called at 5:40 p.m. to report concerns about an occupied vehicle with its lights on that had been parked across the street for more than half an hour. The car was gone when police arrived to investigate. Someone called at 9:02 p.m. to notify police that a vehicle would be left in the parking lot at the General Store overnight.
Wednesday, Jan. 6
At 9:53 a.m. a motorist called to report that a car was speeding on Ayer Road and passing cars in a no-passing zone. The caller was able to provide police with the car’s license plate number, which police checked out after being unable to locate the vehicle. Police say that the plate was traced to an Ayer resident, but because the associated address was incorrect, police were not able to contact the person about the alleged speeding incident. At 1:33 p.m. someone from the Department of Public Works asked that an officer speak with a resident on Park Lane about not parking on the roadway during winter storms. Someone stopped at the station at 3:10 p.m. to turn in a license plate found in the library parking lot. The plate was returned to its owner. At 4:28 p.m. someone on Lovers Lane called on the emergency line to report a possible burglary in progress. The caller said she was an employee of the homeowner, and after arriving at the home she had seen something that made her concerned that a stranger could be in the house, so she vacated the premises. Police checked the home but found no one there. An employee of Pan Am Railways called at 7:11 p.m. to notify police that a signal post was down at the crossing on Still River Depot Road. The caller said someone from Pan Am would be taking care of it. An officer went to the crossing, checked the area, and found that the post appeared to have been knocked down deliberately. Police say someone stole one of the signal lights as well as the “Railroad Crossing” sign.
Thursday, Jan. 7
At 6:13 a.m. a motorist called to report that a signal light had been knocked down on Ayer Road on the southbound side near the Route 2 overpass. Police notified the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. At 7:18 a.m. a caller reported a two-car accident on the Route 2 eastbound on-ramp. State police were notified and responded to the scene.
Friday, Jan. 8
Someone called on the emergency line at 5:07 p.m. to report that the driver of a tractor-trailer unit was attempting to reverse direction on Ayer Road and that the vehicle was partly in the roadway, posing a traffic hazard. The truck was gone when police arrived. Police and the ambulance crew were called to the scene of a two-car accident on Ayer Road near Sorrento’s at 5:58 p.m. Police say one car slowed and the car behind it didn’t slow enough, striking the first vehicle in the rear. One car was towed, and the driver of the second car was cited for following too closely. Both drivers refused medical treatment. At 6:17 p.m. police were called to another two-car accident in front of Sorrento’s. Police say one car rear-ended another in the stop-and-go traffic that resulted from the previous accident. There were no injuries and neither car was towed. However, the driver of the second car was cited for failure to use caution when stopping.
Saturday, Jan. 9
At 7:57 p.m. police and ambulance personnel responded to the scene of a single-car accident on Ayer Road, where a car went off the road. The car sustained heavy undercarriage damage and was towed. The driver, who was cited for failure to stay within marked lanes, refused medical treatment.
Sunday, Jan. 10
State police called at 2:41 a.m. to request assistance from Harvard officers at the scene of a motor vehicle stop on Interstate 495. Police say the car had several occupants, some of whom were known by state police to have a criminal history.
Monday, Jan. 11
An officer on patrol on Shaker Road at 11:17 a.m. stopped to investigate a vehicle that had been traveling slowly along the road. The occupants told the officer they were house cleaners looking for a certain house. The officer told the people the house they were looking for was actually on South Shaker Road. A Park Lane resident called at 5:56 p.m. to speak with an officer about a possible phone scam. Keene, New Hampshire, police called at 8:33 p.m. to request assistance in a drug investigation.
