Sophomore Chloe Alfieri placed third out of a field of 74 competitors in the 300-meter at the MSTCA Auerbach Freshman-Sophomore Meet on Sunday, making her one of the faster sophomores in the state. Fellow sophomore Anya Begue placed eighth in the 55-meter hurdles out of a field of 67 competitors.
On Thursday, the boys and girls track teams competed against Ayer Shirley, both finishing with a loss. Because the meet was held during winter vacation, several athletes were unable to attend.
The boys meet ended with a score of 71–20. Juniors Will Day and Paul Chapman scored the most points for the boys. Day won the 1-mile and finished second in the 1,000-meter. Chapman placed second in the 600-meter, third in the 1,000-meter, and second in the high jump.
In the field events, senior Jon Schmidt added to the boys’ score with a first-place throw in the shot put.
The girls’ meet ended with a close 48–42 score in favor of Ayer Shirley. Bromfield performed well in the sprinting events but took home the bulk of its points in distance. Alfieri won the 55-meter dash, followed closely by eighth-grader Liza Toll, who finished third. Alfieri also scored in the 300-meter, where she finished second. Begue placed first in the 55-meter hurdles.
Bromfield had a slew of first-place finishes in the mid-distance and distance events. Sophomore Sophie Beckman took first in the 600-meter, eighth-grader Tessa McClain won the mile, and senior Kate Toll won the 2-mile. Seventh-grader Hannah Beckman also scored in the 2-mile with a third-place finish. Kate Toll and McClain further increased Bromfield’s score with second- and third-place finishes in the 1,000-meter. In the high jump, Sophie Beckman and junior Grace Turnbull tied for first place.
Bromfield’s next meet is scheduled to take place Thursday, Jan. 7, at Wachusett Regional High School, where the Trojans will run against Gardner.
