On behalf of the Harvard Council on Aging, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Housing Expo held Nov. 21 at the Unitarian Universalist Church Fellowship Building. More than 50 residents and 13 exhibitors shared information about services available in the area to help seniors age in place and avoid institutionalization. Speakers included representatives of the statewide Mass Councils on Aging, adult day health programs, and services provided through Aging Service Access Points (ASAPs).
The response to the expo underlines the need for a variety of accessible housing options in Harvard. Our senior population is growing each year, and Harvard frankly does not have the resources to meet their housing and service needs. For example, seniors needing assisted living services must go outside the town whether or not they wish to do so. Elders who hope to downsize and stay in Harvard are equally out of luck. As a community, we need to explore how we can creatively address this problem. Indeed, it will take a united effort to do so.
The Council on Aging will continue to work with the Harvard League of Women Voters and the Friends of the Council on Aging to explore options for meeting the housing needs of seniors in Harvard. We invite all interested residents to join in our efforts.
