In the Nov. 13 issue, the Press provided some historical information about the first Christmas tree planted on the Common. Further research reveals that the tree planted in 1923 is not the one standing on the Common today. According to Ida Harris’ “Harvard History, 1894–1940,” the original tree, a “beautiful spruce,” was uprooted in the great New England hurricane of 1938. The Harvard Woman’s Club replaced the tree in 1939.
