Bromfield faced three tough opponents last week and emerged with a 2–0 win over Oakmont, a 1–1 tie with Groton-Dunstable, and a 0–1 loss to Douglas.
Oakmont still clings to the number-one spot in the Midland Wachusett C League, but Bromfield is catching up: Last week’s Wednesday victory over the Spartans propelled the Trojans into second place.
After a 0–1 loss to Oakmont earlier in the season, Bromfield was determined to win the game. The Trojans started off strong only to have the Spartans’ offense sneak through their defensive line. Oakmont was awarded a corner kick, which was intercepted by Bromfield senior Sophia Turchetta. She cleared the ball to sophomore striker Sarah Moore, who sprinted down the line with it, dodging the Oakmont defenders and goalie to score.
The Bromfield defense and goalie had a busy afternoon as Oakmont continued to make strong offensive plays. However, none of them resulted in a goal.
Bromfield continued its offensive pressure on Oakmont. When a missed attempt on the Spartans’ net resulted in a goal kick, Moore took control of the ball and scored, making the first half’s score 2–0.
Although the second half was scoreless, it was no less interesting than the first half, with drama on the sidelines reaching a season high.
As Oakmont became increasingly determined to regain the lead, the number of fouls rose dramatically. The Oakmont players’ ability to maintain their composure was not helped by the unsportsmanlike behavior of their coach, who began insulting referees and players alike. The coach’s behavior garnered him a yellow card, and with 10 minutes left in the game, he called a timeout. His continued use of abrasive language toward the referees resulted in a red card, prematurely ending the game.
Groton-Dunstable, Douglas
On Saturday, Bromfield faced off against Groton-Dunstable. Strong winds made playing conditions difficult as goal kicks and punts were negatively affected by the wind. Despite the tricky conditions, the Trojans emerged with a 1–1 tie against the Division 2 school. Bromfield’s goal was scored by senior Kelsey L’Ecuyer and assisted by Moore.
Bromfield played Douglas on Monday amid cold temperatures. Douglas, ranked second in the Dual Valley League, proved to be a tough opponent. Although the Trojans applied strong offensive pressure throughout the game, they were unable to score and suffered a 0–1 loss.
Bromfield then had three league games and one nonleague game remaining in the regular season schedule. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, the Trojans were scheduled to play Gardner, and on Friday, Oct. 23, they are slated to face Tyngsborough. Both games will take place at Harvard Park. The Trojans will play top-ranked Sutton on Monday, Oct. 26, and their final game of the regular season will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 28, against Littleton.
