Sunshine and mild temperatures are forecast for the long Columbus Day weekend, perfect weather for apple picking! This is Old Frog Pond Farm’s last weekend for pick-your-own apples, all certified organic. Pick-your-own apples at Westward Orchards will probably continue through the weekend of Oct. 17, Carlson’s will have them through the end of the month, and Doe Orchards will have them for at least a few more weeks. Doe Orchards owner Pam Lawson said, “As long as there are some apples and people want to pick, we keep going.
Carlson Orchards, 115 Oak Hill Road
Apples: pick-your-own and at the stand; check their Facebook page for varieties. Spartlett pears, pumpkins, gourds, mini pumpkins, Indian corn, and cornstalks. Sweet corn and acorn, butternut, and buttercup squash from Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, New Hampshire. Chrysanthemums and apple firewood available. Pumpkin patch is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Doe Orchards, 327 Ayer Road
Apples, both pick-your-own and at the stand: Macoun, Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Cortland, McIntosh, and more. Also at the stand: honey, pumpkins, and utility apples. Apple firewood available by the bin or bucket. Check the orchard’s blog at doeorchards.wordpress.com or their Facebook page for updates on apple varieties.
Harvard General Store, 1 Still River Road
A variety of produce from Ad Astra Farm on Old Littleton Road and apples and pears from Carlson Orchards.
Old Frog Pond Farm, 38 Eldridge Road
This is the final weekend for pick-your-own apples at Old Frog Pond Farm. They may be open Monday if there are enough apples; the info will be on their website at www.oldfrogpondfarm.com by Sunday. At the stand (on the front porch): cider, potatoes, kale, tomatoes, and garlic. All crops certified organic by Baystate Certified.
Westward Orchards, 178 Mass. Ave.
Apples, both pick-your-own and in the store: Macoun, Empire, Ginger Gold, Gala, McIntosh, and Cortland. Also in the store: Roxbury Russet apples, pears, pumpkins, plums, nectarines, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, watermelon, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, leeks, Brussel sprouts, peppers, broccoli, beans, eggplant, beets, kale, Swiss chard, tomatoes (including heirloom and cherry), and red onions. Wagon rides to pick-your-own pumpkins on weekends, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Willard Farm, 218 Still River Road
Yellow, white, and bicolor corn, pumpkins, mini pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn. Still some potatoes, peppers, hot peppers, and the occasional eggplant.
