The Harvard General Store will host an open mic night for youth Friday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m.
Harvard Farmers Market
The Harvard Farmers Market will be Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hildreth Elementary School. Growing Places will be at the market with its Dirt Truck. Vendors will include Bagel Alley, Balance Rock Farm, C&C Lobster and Fish, Westward Orchards, and more. Pastel Painting Demonstration at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will host a pastel painting demo Sunday, Aug. 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at the museum’s Wayside Visitor Center. Artist Cynthia Crimmin will demonstrate the techniques and approaches she takes with pastels to make artwork that is uniquely her own, transforming a chalky stick of color into a work of beauty. Free with admission.
‘Henry V’ with Kenneth Branagh Showing at Library
The Harvard Public Library will show Kenneth Branagh’s 1989 film “Henry V” Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in Volunteers Hall. This film is required viewing for Ms. Hyde’s 12th grade honors English literature class at the Bromfield School. Free and open to the public.
Food for Thought Film Festival at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will reprise its Food for Thought film series of last winter starting Saturday, Aug. 29, at 10:30 a.m. with the film “Chasing Ice.” “Y.E.R.T. (Your Environmental Road Trip) will run from noon to 1:15 p.m.; “Reel Injun” from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m.; and “Eating Alabama” from 3 to 4:05 p.m. Free with admission.
Plan Ahead for Devens Book Group
The Fort Devens book group will meet Friday, Sept. 25, at noon, at the Fort Devens Museum, 94 Jackson Road, Devens. The group will discuss “Horse Soldiers” by Doug Stanton, which is about the Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. River’s Edge Community Band in Hudson
The River’s Edge Community Band, under the direction of David Bailey, will welcome new members Thursday, Sept. 24, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Room C108, Hudson High School, 68 Brigham Street. The 50-piece band welcomes musicians in all sections, including clarinets and trumpets, bassoons, saxes, and string bass. Rehearsals are held every Thursday; no audition is required. Adults and students from grade 8 to 12 are welcome.
Connecting Communities
in Westford
Freedom’s Way National Heritage Association will sponsor a “Connecting Communities” event Sunday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at O’Brien Farm, 18 Vose Road, (not Vose Hill Road) Westford. Once a family subsistence farm, the property includes 23 acres of conserved landscape that is managed for wildlife habitat and passive recreation. Fourth-generation owner Charlie McColough will lead tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. of the pre-1800 English-style barn and wildlife habitat; tours require registration at www.freedomsway.org. Fishing Clinic
The Trustees of Reservations will host a fishing clinic every Saturday through Oct. 10, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Ranger Station, Tully Lake Campground, 25 Doane Hill Road, Royalston. Participants can join Ranger Keith for lessons on proper fishing techniques, including casting, general fishing tips, fish identification, and catch-and-release.
