End-of-Year Fun Fair
The Harvard PTO will host a Fun Fair on the last day of school, Friday, June 19, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Pond Road field, or in case of rain, in the Bromfield gym. The event will feature a food tent with barbecue from Slater’s of Bolton and many other treats; games and prizes; and inflatables for all ages. Local band Alright will play during the later hours.
Family Night Movie
The Harvard Public Library will present a movie about a bear from Peru Friday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. Popcorn and water will be provided.
Centennial Saturday at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will host a day of family fun and free admission to close its 100-year anniversary celebration Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum grounds will be filled with live music, craft activities, games, guided trail walks, children’s events, and refreshments. Admission to the museum galleries will also be free. Music will be supplied by the bluegrass band SloGrass, and Animal Adventures will be doing a presentation about the critters found in and around the Fruitlands property.
World War I Sites in Italy
Former Harvard resident Ellie Buford will present “Tours in Italy Featuring World War I Sites” Saturday, June 20, at 12:30 p.m. at the Fort Devens Museum, 94 Jackson Road, Devens. She will talk about sites in the Veneto region in the hills of the Prosecco. The program will follow a brief annual meeting of the Fort Devens Museum. (www.fortdevensmuseum.org)
Open Mic at General Store
The Harvard General Store will host an Open Mic Night Saturday, June 20, at 7 p.m. upstairs at the General. To secure a performance spot on the schedule, contact dominique@harvardgeneralstore.com. Father’s Day Concert
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will host a concert Sunday, June 21, at 3 p.m. at 145 Bolton Road. The Saturdays, a musical group that blends folk, bluegrass, rock, and blues, will play original arrangements of contemporary and traditional favorites. The group features vocals, guitar, dobro, mandolin, and percussion. Admission is $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers. Proceeds benefit the services of the Healing Garden, which offers educational and therapeutic services to those affected by cancer. Go to www.healinggarden.net for event updates or cancellations.
Ice Cream Social at Library
The Harvard Public Library’s traditional ice cream social will kick off the library’s summer reading program, where children keep logs of their reading, earn prizes (starting on June 24), and in general mark the beginning of the season of leisure-time reading. Several other events—in addition to those listed below—will also be taking place this summer at the library, so stop in often and remember to keep an eye on the library’s website, www.harvardpubliclibrary.org.
The ice cream social will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 3 p.m., on the library lawn. The event will feature make-your-own sundaes, socializing with friends, and activities including face painting, paper-airplane making, sidewalk chalk art, and bubble blowing. Volunteers are needed to help with activities and can sign up in the Children’s Room. Rain dates are Wednesday, June 24, and Thursday, June 25. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own nondisposable bowls, cups, and spoons. Preregistration is a must to ensure enough treats for all and to notify people if a rain date is necessary. Paws and Read
Reading to Winston the Therapy Dog is an enjoyable way to bolster a child’s reading confidence. Registration is required. Sale at Bargains in the Belfry
Bargains in the Belfry at the Unitarian Church will hold its 50-percent-off sale Tuesday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The discount continues on Tuesday, June 30, which is the final day of the season. On sale is a good selection of clothes, books, toys, and videos.
Preventing Tick-Borne Disease
The Nashua River Watershed Association will host a “Tick Talk” to explain the best way to avoid the bites that lead to Lyme and other tick-borne diseases Tuesday, June 23, at 7 p.m. at the Harvard Public Library. Panelists will include experts from the fields of public health, wildlife biology, academic research, and veterinary medicine. Participants can learn about the life cycle of local ticks, local tick-borne diseases, disease transmission and symptoms in humans and pets, and best practices to avoid and control ticks. Pub Night
Harvard’s own Bare Hill Band will perform Friday, June 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Harvard General Store. The kitchen opens for supper at 6:30 p.m., and beverages are available for sale on the first floor (for consumption on the second floor).
Happy Teeth

Welcome Baby Reception
Families with a baby born during the past year are invited to the Harvard Family Association’s Welcome Baby event Sunday, June 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Fruitlands Museum. Bare Hill Triathlon
The Harvard Lions Club will host the Bare Hill Triathlon Sunday, June 28, beginning at 8 a.m. on the grounds of the Harvard Public Library. The race includes a half-mile swim, 10.5-mile bike ride, and 3.2-mile run. The staging and transition areas and finish line will be on the library grounds. Individuals and relay teams are welcome. Individual registration is $70, teams $80. Since this is an official USA Triathlon-sanctioned event, there is also a $12 USAT fee for all entrants. Nashua River Festival
The Lancaster Friends of the Nashua River will host a festival Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kalon Farm Field, 339 Seven Bridges Road, Lancaster (across from the Bolton Fairgrounds). The event, which is free and open to all, will feature many family activities and exhibitors from throughout the community. Ink as Art
The River’s Edge Arts Alliance will host an art exhibit reception Saturday, June 20, from 7 to 9 p.m., third floor at 43 Broad St., Hudson. The “thINK art” project will display tattoo artwork, accompanied by stories behind the tattoos and the photography by Jonathan Route. Refreshments will be served.
BudBurst Project
The Sudbury Valley Trustees will host a free training workshop for Project BudBurst Monday, June 22, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Wolbach Farm, 18 Wolbach Road, Sudbury. BudBurst (www.budburst.org) is a nationwide network of people who monitor plants as the seasons change. Participants can learn how to collect data on local plants and upload it to Project BudBurst, thereby contributing to a better understanding of plants and climate change. Handbell Concert
St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church of Acton will host a Handbell Concert Tuesday, June 23, at 7 p.m. at 435 Central St., Acton (one-half mile north of Idylwilde).
