The June 8 Super Town Meeting upended some widely held assumptions about Harvard, not the least of which is the idea that voters are no longer interested in attending town meetings. The turnout was a huge surprise to the selectmen, especially Chairman Ron Ricci, who said this week that he had predicted attendance would be limited to “the boards and six of our closest friends.”
But with more than 200 Harvard voters turning up for a town meeting about Devens zoning on a warm evening in June, the selectmen think it might be worth trying again to hold Annual Town Meeting on a weeknight or two instead of all day Saturday. It’s an experiment they tried two years ago in an attempt to boost attendance, but the results were mixed, with a good turnout the first night and not so good the next.
At their meeting this week, the selectmen agreed they would discuss it again at their July 14 meeting and maybe even pick a date, probably early in April.
