The Minuteman Road Club has donated the $5,500 that was raised by the Ken Harrod Memorial Bike Race to the Harvard Firefighters Association. During the May 30 event, 367 registered riders participated in six USA Cycling-sanctioned races on a course through Harvard’s eastern roads, following the old Veryfine Bike Race route. A portion of each rider’s entry fee was the source of the donation. Charitable causes supported by the Firefighters Association include the Equipment Fund, the Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) program, and the Harvard Firefighters Family Crisis Fund.
The race is held each spring in memory of Harvard firefighter Ken Harrod, who passed away in May 2010 and had often imagined a great biking event in town. The Harvard Firefighters Scholarship Fund ($1,000 awarded in 2015) is funded by the race.
