After a nail-biting win away at Lunenburg Wednesday, April 29, Bromfield girls’ track and field went on to place second at the District Relays held at Shrewsbury May 2.
In the dual meet against Lunenburg, Bromfield won by a very narrow margin, 73–72, beating Lunenburg for the first time in many years. At District Relays, Lunenburg edged out Bromfield by two points and finished well ahead of third-place Littleton, which trailed Bromfield by 12 points.
Bromfield is currently ranked first in the league with Lunenburg a close second, making them the top contenders for league champions. Both times the teams have come face to face, the winning margin has been incredibly small, and the result has come down to the last event.

Indeed, on April 29 against Lunenburg, Bromfield’s first place in the 4×400-meter relay won the meet. At District Relays, Bromfield placed second in the high jump, leaving the Trojans two points short of tying Lunenburg for first. The Bromfield girls anxiously awaited the high-jump results; junior Suzy Opalka recounts, “Usually we don’t wait around, but we knew that if we got first in high jump, then we would tie for first overall … we only got second but it was still exciting because it has been a while since Bromfield girls have done well in that meet.” The last time Bromfield placed first in District Relays was in 2011.
District Relays
At District Relays, Bromfield placed first in pole vault and the 800-meter sprint medley, which consists of a 200-meter leg, two 100-meter legs, and one 400-meter leg. Pole vaulters included freshman Arielle Sclar, junior Suzy Opalka, and senior Harriet Holmes, whose combined heights added up to 22 feet, 1.75 inches. In the sprint medley, seventh-grader Sam Schoenberg ran the 200-meter, sophomore Sarah Doben and junior Amy Hunter each ran a 100-meter, and freshman Chloe Alfieri finished with the 400-meter for a combined time of 1 minute, 54.99 seconds.
“We really have a shot at district champs this year,” said Bromfield Coach David Boisvert after District Relays. “Lunenburg is our toughest competitor, and we’ve lost one and won one against them, both only by a small margin. Right now it’s up in the air, but we’ve definitely got a shot.”
Bromfield was scheduled to face Gardner at McCurdy Track Tuesday, May 5. On Thursday, May 7, Bromfield will compete in a tri-meet against Narragansett and Tyngsborough, also to take place at McCurdy Track in Harvard.
