Harvard’s ‘stay safe’ Celebration needs you
Celebration is the “keep our children safe” after-prom party that has been hosted by the town at the Bromfield School for more than 15 years. It is the town’s gift to its juniors, seniors, and their parents, where 95 percent of the students arrive at the school by midnight and stay until 5 a.m. the next morning, when Chef Paul provides breakfast and the kids leave safely to go home and get some rest. During these five hours there are activities, prizes, games, continuous food and alcohol-free drinks, places to hang out with friends or nap, and many surprises.
Celebration is supported by monetary contributions from parents and sponsors, fundraisers, and many volunteers, including electricians, sound techs, overnight chaperones, setup and cleanup people, painters, and more. Can you help? Yes. Is help restricted to parents of Bromfield students? No, you do not need to have any connection to the Bromfield School.
To see if you can help by donating a needed item for 24 hours, volunteering to cook, chaperone, or help with setup and takedown, go to www.bromfieldcelebration.com. Or participate in the online auction, which is open until May 15, and order T-shirts with the Celebration 2015 logo.
Note that chaperones and setup and takedown people are especially needed. Chaperoning is open to anyone over the age of 21, such as recent Bromfield graduates and HES parents. (A CORI check is required for chaperones; see the website for more information.)
Festival seeks cultural ambassadors, helpers
Each year, Hildreth Elementary School holds a Festival of Cultures to highlight the diversity of Harvard. This year’s Festival and Student Artist Reception will be held Friday, May 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the elementary school. Festival organizers are looking for help as follows:
Be an ambassador: Share your family’s heritage with a display of crafts, books, clothing, posters, or other items from your culture or family’s country of origin. Consider partnering with another family to host a table.
Perform: Present a performance (up to 3 minutes) highlighting an ethnicity, culture, or country. Performances just need to have at least one child from Harvard in the cast, so consider asking your child’s dance or martial arts class to perform. Performances in the past have included martial arts or Chinese yo-yo demonstrations, drumming, music, dances, skits, and songs from various countries, cultures, and languages.

Library offers free magazines
Through the digital magazine service Zinio, the Harvard Public Library offers free access to current digital editions of many popular magazines for a variety of devices. There are no holds, no due dates, and no limit to the number of magazines a library patron can download.
