After an 0–3 start to the season, the Bromfield baseball team pulled off an impressive win over the Clinton Gaels on Friday, April 17. Senior captain Andrei Weber stole the show on the mound, capping off a complete game with 13 strikeouts in a 5–3 win for the Trojans. In an odd scenario, the Trojans were deemed the home team despite playing in Clinton.
The Gaels put up the first run of the game with back-to-back, one-out doubles in the top of the first inning, but Bromfield charged back in the bottom half with two base hits, two walks, and a sacrifice for two runs.
In the second inning, Weber began putting away Clinton hitters, striking out eight over a span of four innings. Then the Trojans increased their lead with a two-run double from senior captain Zane Atwood in the bottom of the second. And they added to their lead an inning later thanks to an error by the Gaels’ shortstop, Sergio Perez, allowing Trojan sophomore Sam Rosenfield to score and make it 5–1.
After two quick outs to start the fifth inning, Weber ran into trouble as Perez singled; he was brought home thanks to a fielding error by Trojan center fielder Tommy Jackovitz. Another error allowed another Clinton run to cross the plate, making it a 5–3 game.
While the Bromfield offense couldn’t muster any more runs, Weber had all the help he needed, pitching through the sixth inning with nine strikeouts already under his belt. He struck out the side in the sixth and then struck out one more in the seventh. Despite having men on the corners with two outs, the Gaels attempted to steal second to get the tying run into scoring position. Trojan catcher Atwood gunned the runner down, however, clinching Bromfield’s first win of the 2015 season.
A game between the Bromfield Trojans and the Nashoba Tech Vikings on Monday, April 20, was rained out after two full innings. No date has been set for when the game will be restarted.
