The Bromfield indoor track teams are currently in the midst of championship season. The Midland Wachusett Division C League meet took place Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Wachusett Regional High School, and the district meet was held Saturday, Feb. 7, at Fitchburg High School.
Sophomore Grace Turnbull was the only Bromfield girl to place at districts. With a jump of 4 feet 10 inches, Turnbull finished third in the high jump out of a field of 23 jumpers.
The Bromfield boys’ team fared better, placing in two individual events and in the 4 x 400-meter relay. Senior Price Day won the 1-mile with a time of 4 minutes 49.96 seconds, and sophomore Cole Stecyk finished sixth in the 600-meter with a time of 1:36.50. The 4 x 400m relay team consisted of senior Hunter Ashley, senior Matt Polimou, Stecyk, and Price Day.
At the leagues
At the league meet, neither the girls’ nor the boys’ team finished high in the cumulative team rankings, with the girls placing fifth out of eight teams and the boys placing sixth out of eight teams. However, there were some impressive individual performances on both sides of the meet.
At league meets, the top six finishers in each event score points. The Bromfield girls had top-six finishers in seven events. The highest placement for a Bromfield girl came from Turnbull, who won the high jump with a jump of 4 feet 8 inches. Senior Brianna Harte rounded out the scoring in field events with a solid fifth-place finish in the shot put.
In the distance events junior Kate Toll placed fifth in the 2-mile, and freshman Sophie Beckman placed sixth in the 1,000-meter. In the sprinting events junior Deirdre Kennedy finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles, and sophomore Sarah Doben placed fifth in the 300-meter.
The Trojans finished the meet strong, with a decisive third-place finish in the 4 x 200m relay. Running the 4 x 200m relay were freshman Anya Begue, freshman Cameron Hettich, junior Carlisle Ferguson, and Kennedy.
Although neither of Bromfield’s seventh-graders placed at the league meet, Liza Toll and Tessa McClain had strong races against older runners despite being the youngest athletes at the meet. Liza Toll placed 10th in the 55-meter dash in a field of 22 runners, and McClain placed seventh in the 600-meter, finishing less than half a second behind the sixth-place runner.
A first in 1,000m race
In the boys’ league meet, Price Day brought Bromfield a win in the 1,000-meter, beating his competition by almost three seconds. Day placed second in the boys’ 1-mile as well, finishing only 0.26 seconds behind the first-place runner. Sophomore Paul Chapman also scored points in the distance events, placing sixth in the 2-mile.
In the sprinting events, Ashley placed in both the 55-meter dash and in the 300-meter, finishing fourth and third, respectively.
Also placing for the Trojans was Stecyk, who came in fourth in the 600-meter. Additionally, both Bromfield relay teams placed. Running the 4 x 220-yard relay were senior Alvin Li, junior Kyle Route, sophomore Tristan Cronin, and Polimou. The 4 x 440-yard relay was run by Stecyk, sophomore Will Day, Route, and Polimou.
The Trojans have two meets remaining in their season: a dual meet against Oakmont on Wednesday, Feb. 11, and the state meet on Sunday, Feb. 15.
