The Bromfield girls’ varsity basketball team struggled through its first game of the season away at Littleton High School on Monday night, with a final score of 76-29 in Littleton’s favor.
The Littleton Tigers dominated the game from the start, scoring 42 points in the first half. Littleton’s leading scorer for the half was senior guard Meaghann Ackerman, who scored 15 points and had two rebounds and four steals. Ackerman’s teammate Erin Dorey, a junior guard, scored nine points in the first half, followed by sophomore forward Sarah Smith, who scored seven points.
The Tigers exhibited outstanding team effort with fluid and sharp ball movement throughout the game. The team was patient and waited for the open player before passing the ball. Bromfield and Littleton also displayed aggressive and physical defense throughout the game, with both teams receiving multiple fouls in each half.
The Trojans’ top scorer in the first half was sophomore guard Hannah LoChiatto, who tallied up nine points for her team. Sophomore guard Abbey Pacl added two points, and the score at the end of the first half stood at Tigers 42 and Trojans 11.
The second half picked up for Bromfield, with senior co-captains Amy Jorgensen and Kirsten Sundeen scoring six points apiece. LoChiatto, junior guard Meghanne Fitzsimmons, and senior co-captain Kyra Doher each put two points on the scoreboard as well.
Littleton’s Smith racked up another 12 points in the second half, leading her team in layups and foul shots. Smith ended the game as the top scorer for her team with 27 points.
Bromfield’s Pacl stood out for her team in rebounds, grabbing four in the first half and three in the second. Tallying up all the rebounds for the night, Pacl had the most individually between the two teams with seven total.
Hoping to be a contender
Bromfield’s head coach, Mike Davidson, commented after the game with regard to the score and the team’s first loss, that the team has 20 games on its schedule, “and this is the best team that they are going to play all year. So, the season starts Wednesday…” When asked how he thinks the team will do with the rest of the season, he said, “I think we are going to contend but are hoping for a league title.”
The Trojans were set to continue their season on Wednesday at home against South Lancaster at 7 p.m.
