Bromfield’s first meet of the indoor track season took place on Saturday, Dec. 13, against Lunenberg at Fitchburg High School. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams lost, with scores of 35-55 and 42-48, respectively.
With a squad of only 12 girls, the Trojans’ biggest challenge is having enough athletes to compete in every event. At Saturday’s meet, the girls’ team did not run any relays, which led to an easy 15-point gain for Lunenburg.
The highest point scorer for the Bromfield girls was sophomore Sarah Doben, who placed first in both the 55-meter dash and the 300m. Bromfield’s other first-place finisher was sophomore Grace Turnbull, who won the high jump.
One of the day’s most exciting races was seventh-grader Tessa McClain’s third-place finish in the 600m. McClain was the only runner from Bromfield in that race.
The boys’ meet was close, with a score of 42-48. The Trojans had solid performances in the sprinting events, with senior Hunter Ashley placing first in both the 55m dash and the 300m. Sophomore Cole Stecyk scored another first place for Bromfield in the 600m, outrunning his Lunenburg competition by more than 15 meters.
The Trojans also performed well in the distance events, with senior Price Day scoring first in the 1,000m, and sophomore Will Day placing first in the mile. Bringing in points at the end of the meet were the 4 x 200m relay team and the 4 x 400m relay team, both of which placed first.
The Trojans’ next meet against Gardner will be held at Wachusett Regional High School on Thursday, Dec. 18. Both teams will also attend the Winter Fest Invitational Meet, which will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury Crossing.
