The Bromfield girls’ varsity soccer team tied Littleton in an intense home game on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Upper Depot field.
Littleton started the first half with the kickoff and immediately played the ball deep into Bromfield’s end, scoring a goal within the first four minutes of the game. However, the Trojans didn’t let the Tigers’ aggression set them back.
Eager to defend their home field and to prove that the Tigers’ goal was a fluke, Bromfield players attacked the ball with increased energy. The Trojans maintained pressure on the Littleton net, taking several shots, but none was successful.
The play then centered on the middle of the field as both teams fought for the ball. The Bromfield midfielders gained possession, and sophomore Sarah Doben passed the ball to junior Sophia Turchetta. The goalie rushed out to snatch the ball away, but Turchetta maneuvered around her and drove the ball into the net, tying the game.
Fouls and controversial calls
The second half of the game was marked with fouls and controversial calls by the referees as the intensity level soared, with both teams trying to get another goal. Halfway through the second half, Bromfield got a breakaway, dodged the goalie, and powered the ball into the goal. However, after the shot landed in the back of Littleton’s net, a foul was called against the Trojans, discounting the goal.
Despite the Trojans’ efforts, they did not score another goal, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
As of Tuesday, Oct. 14, Bromfield ranked second in the Midland Wachusett C League with a 6-2-3 record, according to the Hometeam website. The Trojans are scheduled to play Oakmont, the first-place team, on Wednesday, Oct. 15, followed by games against Tyngsborough on Friday, Oct. 17, and Groton-Dunstable on Saturday, Oct. 18.
