The Bromfield boys’ varsity soccer team shut out an opponent for the fifth straight time last week, beating Oakmont by a score of 1-0 and then going on to beat Tyngsboro, securing first place in the Wachusett C league of Division 4 soccer.
The victory over Oakmont was won at an away game played under the lights at Hurd Memorial Field on Monday, Sept. 22, thanks to a second-half goal by Adam Lorenz-Kruk.
Bromfield entered the game with a five-game winning streak. The first half started with solid defensive play and passing by both sides, which made things tough for both offenses. Cole Stecyk, Kruk, and Nate Dutkewych missed many shots in the first half. There were also a few collisions between players, but they didn’t leave anyone injured until Colin Grant was taken out of the game with an apparent leg injury as the half drew to a close. Grant would return in the second half. Bromfield and Oakmont were both unable to break through with any form of offense, and the first half ended scoreless.
The second half began with a missed shot by Jack Armstrong and was followed by multiple fouls on Bromfield players. Armstrong later missed a second shot, and Omar Al-Homsi missed a header. At the 55-minute mark, however, Kruk scored the game’s first and only goal on an assist from Jack Armstrong.
With a slim 1-0 lead, Bromfield cruised defensively, stopping any offensive charge mounted by the Spartans. Oakmont did get an opportunity to tie the game with a shot that went into the net over goalie Tyler Brandom’s head. But the goal was overturned after Oakmont was called offsides.
With 12 minutes left in the game, Bromfield called its only timeout. As Oakmont went on the offensive, Bromfield kept up its defense, and the game ended with a win on a scoring shot by Lorenz-Kruk.
Bromfield’s next game was away at Tyngsboro, where the Trojans won 4-2, bringing their winning streak to seven straight games, but ending their shutout streak at five.
Their next game was scheduled to be played against Maynard at Depot Field on Oct. 2.
