The varsity girls’ soccer team beat Oakmont on Monday on their home field by a score of 1-0.
In the opening minutes of the game, the Oakmont offense pressured the Trojans, playing the ball deep into Bromfield’s half of the field. But after a couple of unsuccessful attempts on the Bromfield net by Oakmont, the Trojans regained the initiative.
After a quick series of passes through the midfield, freshman Jessy Andrews received the ball and kicked it through a gap in the Spartans’ defense. Junior Kelsey L’Ecuyer sprinted to the ball, dribbled it though the remaining defenders, then powered the ball into the Oakmont net, making the score 1-0 in favor of Bromfield.
The second half started with a lot of momentum as Oakmont tried to punch through the Bromfield defense. They got several breakaways, but the shots either ended up out-of-bounds or were saved by junior goalie Meghanne Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons made several impressive saves during the game, rushing from the goal to dive onto the ball.
Second half a stalemate
Toward the end of the game, the Spartans got several corner kicks, but were unable to score any goals off of them. On one notable corner kick, the Spartans attempted to make a short pass, but it was intercepted as junior Deirdre Kennedy sprinted toward the ball and dribbled it up the field.
Despite many attempts on the Oakmont net, Bromfield did not score any more goals, making the score a 1-0 win for the Trojans.
At Maynard Sept. 20
On Saturday Sept. 20, the varsity girls were away against Maynard and came home with a tie score of 3-3.
The Trojans started with a bang, scoring a goal in the first four minutes of the game when a corner kick from freshman Sarah Moore arched over the Maynard goalie into the far top corner of the net.
A couple of minutes later, sophomore Kaeli Armstrong crossed the ball to fellow sophomore Sarah Doben. Doben drove the ball into the bottom of the net, making the score 2-0 in favor of Bromfield.
Desperate to score a goal, the Tigers managed to break through the Trojans’ defense, scoring two consecutive goals. Bromfield fought hard for the ball for the rest of the half and had many attempts on the Maynard net; however none of the shots was successful.
After halftime, the Trojans took the field with new energy, determined to score a goal. They hammered the Tigers’ net with shots, but they were saved by the Maynard goalie or were deflected out-of-bounds.
Maynard suddenly got a breakaway and shot the ball at the Bromfield net. The ball hit the crossbar and deflected inward, making the score 2-3.
During the last ten minutes of the game, intensity was at an all-time high as the Trojans fought to score another goal. After a foul was called just outside the 18-yard line on the Maynard end of the field, senior captain Sofia Catalina powered the penalty kick toward the net. Junior Sophia Turchetta ran onto it, scoring a goal for the Trojans and tying up the game with a score of 3-3.
Earlier last week, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, Bromfield faced off against Gardner. The Trojans had several good offensive plays; however, their shots were blocked by the Gardner goalie. They lost 0-1 when Gardner scored in the last ten seconds of the game.
As of Monday, Sept. 22, the team has won four games, tied one game, and lost two games.
The varsity girls played Tyingsboro at home on Wednesday, Sept. 24, winning the game 2-1. They play Leominster away on Monday, Sept. 29.
