On Monday, the School Committee agreed to contribute $1,000 toward resurfacing the McCurdy Track, bringing the track project a bit closer to sufficient funding. Last spring voters at the Annual Town Meeting approved the use of funds from the Community Preservation Fund to resurface McCurdy Track. On Sept. 15, the Harvard Park Trust reported that it had received two bids for the project and that it would go with the lower bid from Cape and Island Tennis Track of Pocasset. Even though the HPT will go with the lower bid, they are still $25,000 short of funding for the project.
The Parks and Recreation Commission and the McCurdy Track Trustees are typically responsible for funding any maintenance on the track, but since they have fallen short of funding, they asked the School Committee for $1,000 in funding.
The School Committee took into consideration that the Harvard Schools use McCurdy for many activities, including soccer games and track meets. The funding will come from the school’s athletic fund, which is where student activity fees go when a child signs up to participate in one of the schools sport programs.
