Town Caucus and nomination papers
A Town Caucus to nominate candidates to fill the vacancy on the Board of Selectmen will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room. The two people receiving the highest number of votes will be nominated by the caucus. Residents may also run for the position by taking out nomination papers, which are available now in the town clerk’s office. The papers must be filed with the clerk by 5 p.m. on Sept. 30. Twenty-nine certified signatures of registered Harvard voters are required to place the candidate on the ballot for town elections. It is not necessary to be present at the caucus to be nominated; however you must sign the caucus Certificate of Nomination by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the town clerk’s office for your name to appear on the ballot. Curriculum night at HES
Curriculum night for parents of students in grades 3 and 4 will take place Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Hildreth Elementary School, starting in the cafeteria and ending in the classrooms. Harvard’s Parent Teacher Organization will be on hand to provide information and collect membership applications.
Bare Hill Pond Forum
The Bare Hill Pond Watershed Management Committee will host “Harbor Master’s Night” Monday, Sept. 22, from 7 to 10 p.m. in Bromfield’s cafeteria. Harvard’s appointed harbor master, Bob O’Shea, will provide information on state, town, and harbor master rules for Bare Hill Pond. He will facilitate an opinion-gathering session about how the town can create a safe and enjoyable environment for all pond users, including those participating in Parks and Recreation programs at the beach, for Camp Green Eyrie, the Bare Hill Rowing Association, visitors, and residents. Forum on allowable grocery store size
The Planning Board, at the request of the Economic Development Committee (EDC), will host a public forum for comments on potential zoning change in the commercial district to allow for a larger grocery store than is currently permitted. The hearing will take place Monday, Sept. 22, at 7:15 p.m. at Center on the Common. Currently, the town’s bylaw allows for the development of a grocery store of up to 15,000 square feet, by right, and up to 30,000 square feet by special permit. Make your voice heard by attending the hearing or by sending your comments by email, to the attention of the Planning Board, to Harvard’s land use administrator, Liz Allard at lallard@harvard.ma.us.
Saturday is ‘Bike Day’ at Farmers’ Market
The Harvard Farmers’ Market will sponsor Bike Day Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m to noon at Hildreth Elementary School. Everyone is encouraged to bike to the market, and there will be a chance for a check-up and minor adjustments made with the help of Pedal Power of Acton. Used bikes will also be collected in support of Bikes Not Bombs, an organization that describes itself as “using the bicycle as a vehicle for social change.” The group says it “reclaims thousands of bicycles each year and creates local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation, mobilizing youth and adults to be leaders in community transformation.” Bikes are taken for free, but a $10 voluntary donation will help defray the cost of shipping the repaired bike to those in need of transportation world-wide.
Booths available at Harvard Flea Market
The Harvard Flea Market—an annual fundraising event for the Harvard Schools Trust and League of Women Voters of Harvard—will take place Saturday, Oct. 11. Harvard residents can rent a booth for the discounted rate of $50 for the day. Support this well-attended school and community event, and clean out your attic or basement at the same time. Consignment items needed at Belfry
The Bargains in the Belfry consignment shop will open in early October and is looking for lightly used women’s and men’s clothing. Bargains is located in the belfry of the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church, on the Common in Harvard, across the parking lot from Town Hall. Prescription drug take-back
The Harvard Police Department will host a prescription drug take-back program Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who want to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medicines can do so by dropping the items off in the lobby of the Public Safety Building, 40 Ayer Road.
Parent/athlete meeting
at Bromfield
