Tour de Pond: Race around Bare Hill Pond
The Bare Hill Rowing Association will host a fun and friendly oar- and paddle-powered boat race around Bare Hill Pond—“Tour de Pond”— Sunday, Sept. 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Scullers and paddlers will navigate around the pond on a marked, 1.7-mile course. The tour will include racing with canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards; even several recreational, flat-bottomed sculling singles will be provided for those with sculling experience who don’t have access to a boat.
Participants can launch from their own docks or bring boats to the beach on race day. Adequate steering skill is required. Spectators are encouraged to come down to the beach and enjoy the races. No parking is allowed at the beach on race day, but there will be a designated area to off-load boats. Parking is in the school lot.
To sign up to borrow a boat and register for the race, go to www.barehillrowing.com. Entry fees are $15 per boat for adults and $10 per boat for juniors. Prizes will be given to top finishers in each event and age category.
Pub Night
The Harvard General Store will host its pub night Friday, Sept. 19, from about 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase starting at 6 p.m., with the musical performance to follow. Harvard Farmers’ Market
The Harvard Farmers’ Market will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon in front of the Hildreth Elementary School. Produce, meat, dairy products, baked goods, seafood, and other products will be available. Bring knives for sharpening at the Venier Forge Knife Sharpeners’ booth. Music will be by The Black Tea Project.
Sept. 19 is also “Bike Day” at the market, where you can have your own bike adjusted and donate your unneeded bikes to “Bikes Not Bombs.” See Notice Board for more information.
Rummage Sale

Civil War Monument Talk
The Fort Devens Museum will host a presentation by John Balco about his study of more than 400 Civil War monuments and grave sites in Massachusetts Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m., at 94 Jackson Road. Balco has assembled his work in 11 volumes, which he plans to turn over to the Massachusetts Miliary Museum. Admission to the program is free, but donations are welcome. Community Living Room
The Center on the Common will host “Community Living Room” Saturday, Sept. 20, from 7 to 10 p.m. The 21-plus crowd is encouraged to experience this pop-up lounge at the Center. Shaker Spring House Walk
The Harvard Historical Commission will lead a walk to the Shaker Spring House Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. The walk will begin in the parking area at the end of Green Hill Road, which is off Old Littleton Road and is the last street on the left, just before the Route 2 overpass. The Shakers constructed the spring, its housing, and the piping to the Shaker Village around 1855. The Historical Commission recommends that participants prepare for the walk by reading a history of the spring by Daniel Boudillion at his website, www.boudillion.com. The walk is limited to 20 people; register at hhcommission.wordpress.com/2014.
Molly Tuttle Trio
The Harvard Friends of the Arts will host the Molly Tuttle Trio Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the Harvard Public Library. Doors open at 7 p.m. Molly Tuttle, John Mailander, and Brittany Karlson create a soulful mix of original and traditional music, displaying a deep respect for the past, with an eye toward the future of acoustic music. Living History Tour by Moonlight
The Harvard Historical Society will host moonlight tours of the town center cemetery Saturday, Sept. 20, starting at the check-in table on the grass next to the General Store. Following the tours, attendees are invited for drinks and a dessert buffet across the street at 1 Elm Street. Tours at 7 p.m.and 7:15 p.m. are full, but reservations can be made for 7:30 p.m. Those without reservations may join a tour at 7:45 p.m. Payment with cash or check must be made at the start of the tour. Reception for Weekly Sculpture Walks
Old Frog Pond Farm will host an artist reception Sunday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m. at 38 Eldridge Road. Music will be courtesy of the bluegrass band Wild Blue Frogs and the Morningside Studio Jazz Band, and artist Linda Hoffman’s studio will be open, exhibiting her sculptures and prints by Erika Radich. In addition, the sculpture walk Around the Pond and Through the Woods will be open both on Sept. 21 and on weekends, 1 to 5 p.m., from now through Oct. 5.
Chamber Ensemble
The Row Twelve Chamber Ensemble will perform a program of classical music, jazz, dance, film, and poetry Sunday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the library. Included will be a short film by Whitney Lauritsen and a reading about Mont Ventoux and Petrarch; “Six Appalachian Vignettes,” and two movements from the “Pathetique” piano sonata by Beethoven. The Ensemble is a branch of the Boston Theater Group. Admission is free.
Armen Donelian Trio
The Fanfare Home Concert Series will present the Armen Donelian Trio Sunday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Chapman and Ruze residence on Willow Road. The concert, to benefit Fanfare, will feature New York-based jazz musician Armen Donelian, who blends his Armenian roots with the deepest currents of modern jazz. George Schuller, son of Gunther Schuller, will be on drums, and Dave Clark on bass. Attendees should bring their own beverages and snacks to share. Frisbee Show
The Harvard Public Library will present a frisbee show for all ages Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the library. Two-time World Freestyle Champion Todd Brodeur will demonstrate simple tricks and catches, show more difficult moves and combinations, and teach the class many tricks and catches that everyone can try. Artist Lecture at Fruitlands
Art and science collide and combine in painter-turned physicist-turned sculptor Julian Voss-Andreae’s studio. Fruitlands Museum will host Voss-Andreae on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. for a lecture titled “Sculpture Inspired by Proteins, Physics and People.” Members free; nonmembers $5. The lecture will feature Voss-Andreae’s large-scale outdoor sculptures and will show how his background in physics and mathematics inspire his creativity.
Ukulele Union

‘Mystery of Music’
The Warner Free Lecture Series will present “Mystery of Music” Friday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Volunteers Hall in the Harvard Public Library. Musicians Steve Peisch and Helen Batchelder will offer a presentation exploring how music affects our moods and how different people and cultures respond to music. Admission is free.
Dog Rescue Day
Great Dog Rescue of New England will be at the Farmers’ Market at Hildreth Elementary School Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon to introduce its adoptable dogs and puppies to new families.
Bird Watching
Professional staff from the Massachusetts Audubon Society will lead a bird-watching tour Saturday, Sept. 26, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Cold Spring Brook Trail, off Barnum Road, Devens. Park at 143 Barnum Road for this free guided tour. Participants should wear long pants and bring bug spray and binoculars.
Apple Harvest Ramble
The ramble, a 5- or 10-mile run through town, will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m. at the Bromfield School. The race starts from Elm Street, across from the General Store. Craft Festival
Fruitlands Museum will host a festival of fine New England crafts Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine in the museum’s upper fields. Local artists will purvey hand-made crafts including glass, photography, mixed media, wood, pottery, and jewelry. Admission is $5 and includes entrance to the museum galleries; admission for children 12 and younger is free.

The Harvard Conservation Trust will host a mushroom hunt Saturday, Sept. 27, at noon, beginning at 56 Stow Road. Musicians Wanted, Hudson
