I have read the Gospels several times and have yet to find a single comment in them about homosexuality. So I was appalled by the statements from St. Benedict’s at St. Patrick’s Day. (See “Local religious school drops out of Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” March 7.) I was sure they were the unfortunate comments of a single individual.
I have an opportunity weekly to talk to people from each of the Benedictine communities in Still River, and to my dismay I did not find a single one who had any reservations about either the tone or content of Mr. Dalton’s comments. I told each I would pray for them, but I will especially pray for the children at their school who are exposed to this thinking daily.
The Jesus I recognize is the God who taught the Golden Rule, preached the Sermon on the Mount, and said, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” I absolutely cannot understand any person who publicly proclaims, by lifestyle and dress, that they are devoting their life to worshiping this God and who then preaches bigotry and intolerance. At first I was unacceptably angry and not able to write this letter. My residual emotion is deep sadness.
