Bromfield junior Price Day broke the school’s mile record once again at the MIAA Western/Central Division II Championship Meet last Saturday at Fitchburg State University. Running with a time of 4 minutes 26.91 seconds, Day bested the former record of 4:30.42 by slightly more than three seconds.
The race culminated in a second-place finish by Day, qualifying him for the state meet, which will be held on Saturday at Bridgewater State College.
Also qualifying for the state meet in the one- mile was sophomore Nick Steele, who ran a time of 4:27.16 and placed third.
The race started off relatively slowly, with none of the competitors wishing to lead. Day and Steele quickly moved to the front of the pack, with Steele leading. Going into the third lap, Day took up the lead.
Ultimately, the race came down to the final 150 meters when a junior from Wahconah Regional began to outkick Day and Steele. As the three competitors sprinted fiercely toward the finish line, the gap between the Trojans and the runner from Wahconah grew smaller; however they were not able to finish ahead of him.
Weather a factor in field events
Although the weather did not come into play in the one-mile, it greatly affected the boys’ pole vault competition. The weather was somewhat chilly at the meet, peaking around the mid-60s, but it was the sporadic rain showers that were problematic. When the downpours began, the mats had to be covered to protect them from the rain, making it difficult for the athletes to stay warmed up.
Despite these weather complications, senior Sam Dyer finished fifth, jumping a height of 11 feet 9 inches.
Also scoring for the Trojans was the 4×800 meter relay team, which placed fifth, running a time of 8:43.02. The team consisted of Steele, freshman Will Day, junior Matt Polimou, and Price Day.
Overall, Bromfield fared well, placing 13th out of 43 teams with a score of 22 points.
