Centennial Celebration at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will celebrate its 100th birthday with an admission-free party Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum. The community is invited to ring in the next 100 years of heritage, nature, and art with the Blackstone Valley Bluegrass Band, kite-flying, Animal Adventures, Deborah Costine Nature Puppets, artist demonstrations, crafts, and museum tours. Cake will be served.
‘Living Whole’ Talk: Body
Psychotherapist and educator Jane Ayres will present an inspirational, educational, and self-help-oriented talk Saturday, June 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Center on the Common. The presentation will focus on the effect that physiology, including mineral toxicities and deficiencies, have on depression, anxiety, and learning disabilities. Admission is $10 at the door. Rummage Sale
The Center on the Common will host the High-Brow Rummage Sale Sunday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center. Shoppers are advised to arrive on time and prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
Concert at Healing Garden
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will host a concert Sunday, June 22, at 3 p.m. at the Healing Garden, 145 Bolton Road. The a cappella group Custom Blend will sing jazz, soul, big band, pop, and more. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Healing Garden, which provides services to cancer patients and their families. Tickets are available at the door, $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers. Ice-Cream Social
The Harvard Public Library will host an ice-cream social to kick off the summer reading season Tuesday, June 24, at 3 p.m. outside at the library. Rain dates are Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26. Participants will make their own sundaes, socialize with friends, and enjoy face painting, paper airplane-making, sidewalk chalk art, and bubble-blowing. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own nondisposable bowls, cups, and spoons; the library can also provide them. Registration is strongly recommended. Ribbon-cutting at Harvard Solar Garden
The offices of Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Jen Benson have announced that a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place Friday, June 27, at 10 a.m. at the Harvard Solar Garden, 295 Ayer Road. The Solar Garden is located behind 285 Ayer Road, the plaza that houses Sorrento’s Pizza. All are invited to attend the ceremony, which marks the very first member-owned, community-shared solar garden in the state of Massachusetts.
Electronics and Bike Recycling
The Congregational Church of Harvard will host a recycling day for electronics and bicycles Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its parking lot. Any item with a plug will be accepted: television sets, monitors, computers, printers, and appliances, including air conditioners, washers, and dryers. Lawn mowers, snowblowers, and items with motors will also be accepted. Computers or small electronics cost $5; television sets are $10 to $30 depending on size; appliances are $10. Bare Hill Triathlon
Harvard’s second annual Bare Hill Triathlon, sponsored by the Harvard Lions Club, will take place Sunday, June 29, beginning at 8 a.m. with a half-mile swim. A 10.5-mile bike ride and 3.2-mile run will follow. The staging and transition areas and finish line will be on the grounds of the library. This event is suitable for seasoned tri-athletes as well as those with no prior experience. It is open to both individual entrants and relay teams. Individual registration is $70 and teams are $80; since this is an official U.S.A. Triathlon-sanctioned event, there is also a $12 fee for all entrants. Participants receive a 2014 Bare Hill Triathlon T-shirt and participation medal, and all finishers are eligible for raffle prizes. Pond Road and the town beach will be closed for the triathlon from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. Spectators for the swimming competition are asked to park away from Pond Road and walk to the beach.
Author Talks About Alcotts
Richard Francis, author of “Fruitlands: The Alcotts and Their Search for Utopia,” will talk about the Alcott children and their presence in the Fruitlands experimental community Sunday, June 29, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Francis has taught at universities on both sides of the Atlantic and has previously written on Mother Ann Lee, founder of the Shakers, and on the Salem witch trials. Free with museum admission.
Artist Talk and Demonstration
Fruitlands Museum will host a talk and demonstration by its artist-in-residence, Richard Kattman, Sunday, June 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the musuem. He will first talk about his abstract landscape paintings and then demonstrate his techniques, en plein air. Refreshments will be provided. Free with museum admission.
Puppet Band
The Harvard Public Library Trust will present the Toe Jam Puppet Band Wednesday, July 2, at 3 p.m. at the library. Toe Jam offers children’s entertainment that families can enjoy together, with interactive, theatrical musical performances and story-telling. Register at 978-456-2381.
Independence Day Fireworks
The town of Harvard will present its annual fireworks display Wednesday, July 2, at Fruitlands Museum. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with musical performances by Bare Hill Band, No Man’s Land, Background Orcs, Good Cookin, and Alright. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is $20 per car, with a $10 discount if someone in the car is wearing a 2014 Fourth of July T-shirt. Walk-in admission is $5 per person; free admission for children under 12. The raindate is Sunday, July 6.

Lancaster River Festival
Lancaster’s Friends of the Nashua River will sponsor a celebration of the Nashua River Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cutler Field (across from the Fairgrounds), Route 117, Lancaster.
