The girls’ and boys’ outdoor track and field teams both lost to tough Lunenburg opponents last Thursday by scores of 62–83 and 47–93 respectively, but not before setting a new Bromfield school record in the pole vault event.
The Trojan girls turned in solid performances across the board, including eight first-place finishes. And the Trojans scored in 15 out of 17 events.
Two relay teams take firsts
The 4×100-meter relay team had a stellar race, running a speedy 53.1 seconds. Freshman Sarah Doben ran first, sprinting to a quick lead over the Lunenburg opposition. She handed off the baton to sophomore Suzy Opalka, who maintained the lead. Another handoff later and junior Heather Flokos sprinted ahead, widening the distance between the Trojans and their opponents. Sophomore Amy Hunter ran the final leg, giving the Trojans a strong first-place finish.
The boys’ team did well despite tough competition, scoring in 13 out of 17 events and finishing first in five. First-place finishers were junior Price Day in the 800-meter, sophomore Nick Steele in the 2-mile, junior Nick Norcross in the high jump, senior Sam Dyer in the pole vault, and the 4x400m relay team, which consisted of juniors Norcross, Matt Polimou, Hunter Ashley, Day.
Both teams are currently preparing for their upcoming dual meet against Oakmont at home on Wednesday, May 14, and for the District Class meets on Saturday, May 17, with the boys at Lunenburg and the girls at Shrewsbury.
A new school record
The most exciting performance of the day was Sam Dyer’s record-breaking jump in the pole vault. As of last week, the school record, held by Dyer, was 11 feet 6 inches; it now stands at 11 feet 9 inches.
