Despite rain, wind, and cool temperatures, the Bromfield girls’ tennis team defeated Gardner 4-1 here in Harvard on Monday.
The girls’ singles almost completely dominated their opponents, winning every set, although there were a couple of close calls. The doubles girls all played well, but only one pair managed to win.
Recently recovered from her injury, junior Lindsay Kerr played first singles and won decisive victories in both sets: 6–0 and 6–0. Senior team captain and second singles Kristen Noyes won her match 6–1 and 6–3, after a long and hard-fought battle. Junior Rose Leikina ended the singles matches, winning 6–1, 6–4.
For the doubles, sophomore Allie Wei and freshman Lisa Jorgenson won after a long match. They solidly won their first set 6–2, but fell behind in the second and lost it 3–6.
During a break after the second set, Coach Chris Holmes said he hoped that they would “hit as strongly as they did in the first set.” And they did, winning the third set 6–4. Second doubles, junior Yanah Joffe and Ariel Jones-Mollod, won seven games, but were unable to beat their opponents and lost 3–6, 4–6.
With these wins and a strong record for the season, Bromfield goes into districts “locked in for second best in the league,” says Coach Holmes. He also notes that they’re “back on the winning track,” after some recent setbacks, and he is confident about their chances in the rest of the season.
