When Harvard voters go to the polls next Tuesday, April 8, they will be asked to fill 20 empty seats on Harvard’s all-volunteer elected boards from among 23 candidates. And now that it has been approved by Town Meeting, they will also vote to decide the fate of a $160,000 capital exclusion to finance a new front-end loader for the Department of Public Works.
Voting will take place in the Bromfield cafeteria between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. To participate you must be one of Harvard’s roughly 4,000 registered voters. Registration for the upcoming election closed two weeks ago, on March 19.
Most candidates are running unopposed. At the top of the ticket, two incumbents—current Chairwoman of the Selectmen Marie Sobalvarro and Selectman Ron Ricci—are seeking to extend their time on the Board of Selectmen for another three years. Candidates for open seats on the Planning Board and School Committee, including some first-time volunteers, are also running unopposed.
Only five seats are contested in this election cycle. There is a race among three candidates to fill two seats on the Parks and Recreation Commission, while another trio of candidates is competing for two seats on the Community Preservation Committee. Two candidates are also competing for a three-year term as town constable.
