Home rule petitions head to Beacon Hill

April 18, 2014

The two home rule petitions approved at Annual Town Meeting this month will now go the Legislature to be guided to passage by State Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Jen Benson. After a brief discussion Tuesday night, the selectmen voted unanimously to send both petitions on as is, although they acknowledged that the OPEB (other post-employment benefits) petition is not entirely to their liking. Board member Leo Blair proposed delaying that one “until we have a more elegant submission,” but the other selectmen favored submitting it and getting legislative feedback before making any changes.

The other petition, to exempt Harvard’s community solar garden from local taxation for 20 years, was clear and the vote was decisive, board members agreed, so it should move forward without delay.
