Kicking off its season with two sweeping wins in a single afternoon, the Bromfield girls’ track and field team is off to an impressive start. In a tri-meet at the McCurdy track on Thursday, April 3, the team beat Clinton 96–43 and Tyngsborough 94–34.
Athletes who scored two first places in the sprinting events include Sarah Doben in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.7 seconds, Deirdre Kennedy in the 100m high hurdles at 18.0 and in the 400m hurdles at 1:16.0, and Nina Sklar in the 400m dash at 1:12.7.
As for the jumpers, Alex Saganich scored two firsts in high jump with a height of 4 feet, 6 inches, Deirdre Kennedy scored first in triple jump at 29-5.5, and Carlisle Ferguson scored first in pole vault at 8-6.
Both relay teams swept the track with firsts all around. The 4x100m B team consisting of Emma Borton, Julia Stoddard, Maddie Steele, and Emma Armstrong came in first against both teams with a time of 58.9. The 4x400m relay consisting of Alex Saganich, Lia McClain, Talbot Chipman, and Nina Sklar, brought in two firsts with a time of 4:56.9.
Top thrower Brianna Harte stunned onlookers in discus with a throw of 100 feet, 1 inch, scoring first place against both teams. Going into the meet, Harte was not sure of what to expect in her best event. She had only been able to practice throwing a few times in preparation for the first meet of the season. As a result, she fouled twice, but it only took one good throw to sweep the field. Also scoring two first places in shot put with a distance of 27-3, Harte is the leading scorer among throwers.
The next meet will take place on Thursday, April 10 at Narragansett. This dual meet will likely be a challenging one, as in the past Narragansett has been a strong and versatile team. Bromfield Coach David Boisvert comments, “There’s no doubt Narragansett will be a tough match, but we’re definitely competitive. We have a bunch of new athletes this year, and many of them scored in the very first meet, which bodes well for the rest of the season.”
