As the Race Director of the Run for the Hills 5K Trail Run (always the Sunday after Labor Day), I was thrilled to learn that the thoughtful proposal to resurface the town’s McCurdy Track has been recommended for approval by the Community Preservation Committee. For over a decade, the McCurdy Track, which was gifted through private donations, has been a town jewel that gets used constantly by the young, the seasoned, the speedy, and those just out for a stroll. In addition to all the normal use by this diverse set of citizens, the track plays host to important events that benefit the town. For example, the 5K race mentioned above draws hundreds of participants annually and donates 100 percent of its proceeds, via the Harvard Conservation Trust, to benefit the town. In fact, tens of thousands of dollars from this event alone have been generated and invested in the preservation of the unique character and natural resources of Harvard.
As with any capital asset, only periodic maintenance/upkeep will preserve its value. Much as a car needs an oil change, tracks need resurfacing. The town of Harvard has enjoyed 10 years of benefits from the McCurdy Track. Please support the warrant that will provide many more years of exercise and fun for all the citizens of Harvard.
