Bromfield is fourth in Mid-Wach League swimming and diving meet

February 7, 2014

Bromfield divers and swimmers stepped up and did what they needed to clinch fourth place out of 12 teams at the Mid-Wach League meet on Jan. 30 at Tantasqua Regional High School. The team rallied, but could not catch Westborough, the third-place team. The eventual champion, Tyngsborough-Groton-Dunstable, and runner up Algonquin Regional were well ahead of both schools.

Fourteen Bromfield swimmers posted Bromfield career best times in one or both of their individual events. Sophomore Alyson Codner swam a gutsy race, coming from behind to challenge the competition in the final yards of the race and dropping eight seconds off of her previous best time this season. Codner’s efforts resulted in a new Bromfield school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:26.53.

Two standout performances

Bromfield diver freshman Trevor (Trippy) Brown and junior swimmer James Allen led the charge for the boys. Brown’s diving performance was highlighted by the stellar execution of a forward dive with one somersault and two twists. His final score of 231.05 broke the Mid-Wach League meet record in the 1-meter diving event.

Allen has raised the bar in every event for every boy in the league and has posted the top time in every swimming event over the course of the season. His impressive time of 52.80 in the 100-yard butterfly is also a new meet record.

Post-season competition continues for swimmers who attained qualifying times at the Girls’ South-Central Sectional meet Saturday, Feb. 8, at 8:30 a.m. at Wellesley College. Codner will compete in the 100 and 200 freestyle, junior Kelly Russell will compete in the 50 and 100 freestyle, junior Melissa Shea will swim in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and junior Casey Sherman will compete in the diving event. Senior captains Amy Hu and Lena Karotkin, junior Hannah Wharton, sophomore Julia LeBlanc, and freshmen Caroline Noyes and Catherine Cooper will join their teammates to compete in all three relays, the 200 medley relay, and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

On Sunday Feb 8 at 9 a.m., the boys will travel to WPI to compete in the Boys South-Central Sectional meet. Allen will compete in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Brown and seventh grader Sam Tonole will compete in the diving event, and sophomores Josh Marinelli and Ben Church will join them in the 200 freestyle relay.
