The Bromfield swimming and diving team shattered a school record and won both of its meets last week, beating Worcester and Nashoba last Wednesday and Northbridge two days later.
At their Jan. 15 meet the Trojans beat Worcester 109–69 and Nashoba 138–52.
There were impressive performances across the board, with Bromfield swimmers and divers placing in the top three for each event.
The Trojans particularly excelled in the 1-meter diving event and in the 100-yard freestyle. In the diving, Casey Sherman (Littleton) and Sam Tonole (Bromfield) placed first and second respectively. In the 100-yard freestyle, Josh Marinelli (Bromfield) placed first; Connor O’Shea (Bromfield) placed second; and Sherman placed third.
A new record
The 500-yard freestyle record was shattered in Wednesday’s meet by Bromfield junior James Allen. The record was formerly held by Eric Hazoury, and it was broken by a margin of nearly 27 seconds, making the new record 5 minutes, 3.74 seconds.
The Trojans were up against Northbridge on Friday, Jan. 17. They won the meet with a score of 123-58. Bromfield had solid finishes in every event, with their diving trio of Sherman, Trippy Brown, and Tonole taking first through third respectively.
Trojan swimmers swept both the 200-yard freestyle, with Melissa Shea (Littleton) taking first, Connor O’Shea taking second, and Catherine Cooper (Ayer) taking third, and the 100-yard butterfly, with Carlisle Ferguson (Bromfield) placing first, Claudia Yao (Ayer) placing second, and Eva Xue (Bromfield) placing third.
An exciting performance
One of the most exciting performances of the meet was in the 500-yard freestyle, which is the longest event in high school swimming. Bromfield seventh-grader Mia Hopman kept pace with her competitors throughout the race and gained on them as it began to draw to a close. Her persistance paid off with a solid third-place finish.
The team has two more dual meets left in the season before Leagues. The Trojans will be racing against Leominster Wednesday and against Nashoba Friday.
