The Maynard High School boys’ varsity basketball squad drilled eight three-pointers to cruise past the Bromfield School 57-38 in a Midland Wachusett D-League match-up in Harvard this past Tuesday.
Aided by pivotal three-point knockdowns in the second half and 11 total for the game, the visiting
Tigers improved to 8-1 on the season, remaining undefeated in league play with a league record of 5-0. The hometown Trojans fell to 1-7 overall, and 1-4 in league play.
Maynard High School point guard Corey Oliver led the scoring with 15 points. The three-pointers were spread evenly among the Tigers’ sharpshooters, as five different players including Oliver registered a three-point bucket on the night.
Bromfield senior Ben Veno and sophomore Jake Frackiewicz led the Trojans’ offensive efforts with seven points each. Sophomore Mark Schwiegershausen and seniors Ryan Kennedy and Ryan O’Leary each contributed five points.
Defensive play dominates
From the opening tip-off, the opposing teams played a tremendous defensive game. The action moved back and forth on the parquet throughout the first quarter. The teams battled to a close 13-11 score, led by Maynard, as they headed into the second quarter. Bromfield’s zone defense kept the game close as the initial three-point tries by the visiting team were mostly unsuccessful.
The second quarter was a repeat as Bromfield again mounted a tough defense. Two successful free-throw attempts by O’Leary brought Bromfield within 10 points with two minutes remaining in the half. However, that score proved to be the closest of the evening, and the Trojans trailed the Tigers 28-17 at the end of the first half.
Bromfield opened the second half with another impressive defensive effort, and the Trojan squad kept the game close, 41-27 as the third quarter came to a close with Maynard continuing to lead.
But it was Oliver who provided the final spark for Maynard and allowed the Tigers to put away the Trojans for good. As the fourth quarter began, Bromfield opted for a full-court press but to no avail. The press opened holes for Maynard as four fourth-quarter three-point shots (two by Oliver) slowly distanced the visiting team from the home team.
