Though buoyed by 13 points from Ben Neville, Bromfield was routed by Clinton 72–45 last Thursday, Jan. 23, on their home court.
Bromfield fought for an early lead, an effort sparked by an impressive shot block by Ryan Kennedy. But Clinton quickly surged ahead, collecting 23 points from seven different players in the first period, compared to six points from four Bromfield players.
The Trojans had a tough time with both ball handling and passing against the forceful Clinton defense and were held back by their opponent’s strong defensive play.
In the second period, Clinton added 25 more points to Bromfield’s eight. Kennedy collected three fouls for the half, leaving Clinton with plenty of opportunities to score. Both teams had foul troubles, but Bromfield was unable to use its opponent’s penalties to its own advantage. The half ended with Bromfield far behind at 48–14.
In the second half, Bromfield rebounded with an 11-point third period, better than either period of the first half. But Clinton kept the pressure on by racking up 14 more points, though that total was lower than its gains in the first half. Clinton extended its lead over Bromfield to 37 points, and the score was 62–25 as the third period came to a close.
Bromfield steadied its defense in the fourth period and held Clinton to just 10 points, as they added 16 more to their own total, seven of which were gained by sophomore Mark Schwiegerhausen, who ended the night with a total of nine. The final score was a lopsided 72-45 victory in favor of Clinton.
Bromfield had nearly doubled its point total in the second half, scoring 27 points compared to 14 in the first. “We can gain momentum,” said Adam Siddiqui, who scored two points, “Hopefully we can find a way to use that momentum to get a win next time.” And win they did in their next game against Murdock, played at home on Monday, Jan. 27.
