The Bromfield boys’ varsity basketball team had a rough night last Friday, losing to West Boylston on its home court by a score of 46–61.
West Boylston was aggressive from the start, shooting its way to a 5–0 lead in the first minute of the game and forcing Bromfield to call timeout.
After a quick 3-pointer from Ryan Kennedy of Bromfield once play resumed, Jake Frackiewicz appeared to change the momentum of the game in Bromfield’s favor with an amazing shot block on West Boylston’s high-scoring Max O’Day. But the game remained close, with West Boylston holding a 15–13 lead by the end of the first period.
The second period did not start well for either team, as fouls and traveling calls prevented either from making game-changing shots. Ben Neville inched the Trojans to a 1-point lead after a free throw, but that did not sap the strength of West Boylston’s club, whose players scored 13 points to Bromfield’s 8 before the half ended.
A lead that was never broken
Bromfield’s passing allowed West Boylston players too many opportunities to steal the ball, and they stormed by the defense, racking up points and forcing Bromfield to call another timeout. By the end of the first half, West Boylston led 28–21.
As the second half began, Ben Neville opened Bromfield’s scoring with a free throw, reducing West Boylston’s lead to 6 points. From that point, the game seesawed back and forth as Tyler Peters and Jake Frackiewicz led the way for their respective teams. Bromfield gained 10 more points before the third quarter ended, but West Boylston added 13 more, taking a 41–31 lead.
In the fourth and final period, West Boylston went on a roll, scoring 20 points in the quarter, leaving Bromfield far behind. Peters and O’Day contributed half the points gained in the last period. As the game concluded, Bromfield’s highest scorer of the night was Frackiewicz, with 17 points, while the rest of the team managed no more than 5 points apiece.
Bromfield was scheduled to meet Maynard at its next game on Jan. 14 at home.
