In response to Mr. Feist’s letter of Dec. 13, deliberately snubbing the boys of Troop 1 Harvard by not giving them your returnables as a protest of the organization’s national policies seems misguided at best. Instead, why not make your opinion known by contacting the appropriate people at the national level? I don’t agree with the BSA’s sexual orientation policy either, but at the local level, I am heartened by the Boy Scouts’ positive impact on our town. Specifically, I am impressed by their politeness and appreciativeness at the transfer station and their active civic presence around Harvard.
Your suggestion that the Girl Scouts take over the returnables from the Boys Scouts would likely result in an unnecessary conflict between two organizations that are trying to teach civility and civic mindedness to their young people. Aren’t we working on these same issues on our town committees and boards?
Lastly, of course, there is another option for your returnables if you wish to continue snubbing the boys of Troop 1: bring your bottles and cans to a redemption center and keep the money for yourself.
