For the second straight season, junior Price Day led the field from start to finish at the MidWachusett Division C championships. His victory came as no surprise as Day was also undefeated in league meets throughout the fall season. Day completed the 3.1-mile course at Ghiloni Park in Marlboro in 17:05. Sophomore Nick Steele followed 10 seconds behind Day in an exciting finish for second place, covering the same course a full 67 seconds faster than he raced in 2012. Over the last five years, four individual Bromfield runners have stood on the podium to accept the gold medal: Day in 2012 and 2013, Nick Kronauer in 2010, and Max Flaton in 2009.
Unfortunately, the squad was unable to defend its team championship this year. The runners placed third overall in team scoring behind Tyngsboro and Oakmont. Freshmen Will Day and Jamie Barrett, and junior Matt Polimou completed the top five scoring positions for the Trojans.
Girls earn a third place
On the girls side, sophomore Kate Toll led the Trojans to a third place team finish behind state powerhouses Tyngsboro and Lunenburg. Missing three of their top five runners from 2012, the young team matched last year’s veterans’ finish, just missing second place by a mere five points. Toll’s 12th place individual performance was good enough for All-League status. Her time this year was 74 seconds faster than last year’s. Behind Toll, junior Sophia Collins was followed across the line by eighth-graders Arielle Sclar, Nina Sklar, and Sophie Beckman.
Next week, the middle schoolers will have a chance to shine against their peers in the Massachusetts Middle School State Championships, while the high school athletes will compete at the prestigious Coaches’ Invitational in Wrentham, Mass.
