Cyclists and skateboarders: Please wear your helmets!

October 11, 2013

I am writing this letter to my former and current students and to all the children in our school system.

Last Tuesday, I was hit by a car while riding my bike on the Harvard/Bolton line. Because I was wearing my helmet, my injuries were minor. If I hadn’t been wearing a bike helmet, there is no doubt that I would have sustained a more severe head injury. Like many of you, I love riding my bike around our town and the neighboring towns. We are fortunate to live in such a bike-friendly place, but too often I see children riding without their helmets buckled securely on their heads. I’ve seen my students riding with their helmets hanging from their handlebars. Please wear your helmets while cycling or skateboarding. Buckle them tightly and don’t leave home without them. You are precious to our community and your safety is always important. Please protect your creative, awesome brains.
