The Bromfield varsity girls soccer team tied Oakmont 3-3 in a hard-fought away game on Monday, Sept. 30, kicking off an up-and-down week that ended with a decisive win at home.
Oakmont always fields a strong team, and games against them are often difficult. Bromfield was also at a disadvantage due to injuries to players on the team, but, despite this, they played a strong game. Senior captain Nikki Margaretos told the Press, “Coming off of a string of rough games, [we] played well against Oakmont. The difference was that we were playing the game as a whole [team], rather than as individuals. Although we tied…, I believe that we were the better team on the field; it was clear that we had the drive to win.”
A challenging opponent
Right from the start, Oakmont proved to be a challenging opponent, scoring the first goal. However, Bromfield players did not let that discourage them. Margaretos adds, “We showed [strong possession], especially in the first half.” A great play from the game was a long defensive ball from Sofia Catalina up to striker Sarah Doben. The ball rolled past the Oakmont defense and Doben charged onto it. Her speed was unmatchable, and she sent a low shot into the corner, scoring a goal. Oakmont slipped another goal through the Trojan defenses, making the score 2-1. Bromfield then went on to dominate the rest of the half, scoring two more goals, one by sophomore Sophia Turchetta and the other by senior captain Rylee Osgood. This brought the score to 3-2 in favor of Bromfield.
Unluckily for the varsity girls, with about five minutes remaining in the second half, Oakmont received a penalty kick inside the 18-yard line. It was a one-on-one shot between the player and the goalie, and with a tricky kick to the upper corner of the net, the ball went in, tying the game up. Despite the team’s efforts, no more goals were scored, resulting in a 3-3 tie.
Prelude to a solid win
Shortly after their Oakmont game, the varsity girls were up against Tyngsboro on Oct. 2. At the away game, Bromfield won 3-1, with freshman Sarah Doben scoring one goal, and Rylee Osgood scoring the other two.
Later that week, the Trojans faced off against Sutton, in yet another away game. Sutton seemed like a formidable opponent, being one of the toughest teams in the league. However, the varsity girls were unfazed. Although they lost the game 2-1, they proved their skill on the field with a close score.
On Monday, Oct. 7, the varsity girls finally had a home game, against Gardner at Harvard Park. Senior captain Lizzie Rooney told the Press this about the game: “The team is really working hard and we sometimes surprise ourselves by what we can do…we didn’t play our best [on Monday], but still came out with a win!” The Trojans won the game 4-2.
