The Bromfield-Acton-Boxborough rowing team took a flotilla of sculling and sweep rowers to the Fourth New England Championships on Lake Quinsigamond last weekend. Varsity rowers competed for places on a three-mile course, while scullers and novice teams raced on a two-mile stretch. Many weeks of preparation paid off with competitive racing in every event, and Bromfield- Acton-Boxborough walked away with the team trophy, with every team—novice as well as varsity—contributing to the winning point total.
Coach Holly Hatton said, “The outstanding success we had this weekend was a testament to the hard work and commitment by all our athletes and coaches. We are particularly proud of our sculling results. Providing the opportunity for our athletes to gain the skills and hopefully succeed in both disciplines of rowing—sweep and sculling—is of paramount importance to our program’s mission.”
Quinobequin Regatta
On the same day, three other women’s 1x teams rowed on the Charles River in the inaugural Head of the Quinobequin Regatta. The race was modeled after the world-famous Silver Skiff regatta held in Italy. The Silver Skiff is a sculling event held strictly for junior competitors from age 10 to 18 years that attracts young rowers from all over the world. Hatton remarked, “It’s great to see this new regatta take shape right in our own back yard.”
